We don’t usually talk about gaming systems, but this definitely has a nice wireless twist. The PlayStation Vita was released in Canada on February 15th, but unlike in the U.S., there was only one version available. Whereas our neighbours to the south had access to a $249 WiFi version and a $299 3G/WiFi version, Canadians didn’t have the option of the more expensive bundle.
Rogers and Sony announced today that the carrier will provide exclusive 3G access to users of the upcoming 3G/WiFi PS Vita, which will go on sale October 2nd for $299.99. Like the iPad, Rogers customers will be able to activate the service on the device itself.
The 30-day cost breakdown is also identical to the iPad: $15/250MB or $35 for 5GB data. The plans are contract-free and can be cancelled at any time, paying only until the end of the 30-day period. The bundle will be sold at retailers with a SIM card installed, conveniently.
The Vita recently received a sizeable software update, bringing improved access to apps such as Twitter, Facebook, Netflix and more. The multitouch-enabled browser is actually quite good (I have a WiFi unit) and overall the device stands to benefit from always-on 3G access, especially for watching trailers and downloading demos. This particular bundle comes with two games, Gravity Rush and Unit 13, which will be downloadable from the PlayStation Store.
