Samsung releases Ice Cream Sandwich source code for Galaxy Note

The Galaxy Note has proven to be an excellent and versatile device since its Canadian release in February. While it is still officially running on Gingerbread in Canada, we are inching closer to the inevitable “Premium Suite” release date, which is when Ice Cream Sandwich will grace our fair country.

In the meantime, Samsung has released the ICS source code for the Galaxy Note’s international version, which has slightly different hardware but the same software experience. This should allow developers to more easily build custom ROMs for the handset, and theoretically bring more robust features to the hardware. I’ve already loaded a custom build of the leaked AT&T Ice Cream Sandwich ROM onto my Galaxy Note and the performance improvements are staggering. S Pen responsiveness is up, applications load faster, and the overhauled menus are joy to use. I’ll be taking a look at it for our next entry in the Custom ROMantics series.

While the news won’t mean much to the average Note user, anybody into tweaking or hacking his or her phone should keep XDA-Developers on speed dial.
