It’s was May 6th (113 days ago) since Bell said they were bringing the award winning Palm Pre to Canada. And today they’ve taken down the “Coming Soon” and have officially released this touchscreen device.
Bell always said it’ll be available in the second half of 2009 and amidst rumours of launch dates, speculation of pricing and curiosity of exactly how long their exclusivity will last – you can now get yourself a Pre for $199.95 on a 3-year contract (with a minimum $45 Voice and Data plan). Outright price is $599.95 with a minimum 500 MB data plan.
We’ve done a number of video reviews, so make sure you check out Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 to have a full insight into the Pre and its capabilities.
The Palm Pre has overall dimensions of 2.3 inches x 3.9 inches x 0.67 inches and weights in at 135 grams (same as the iPhone). In addition, the Pre comes with a 3.1 inch touchscreen (320×480 resolution), full QWERTY keyboard, Built-in GPS, music player, 3.5 mm headset jack, can hold up to 8GB of memory, get apps from the App Catalog, 3-megapixel camera with LED flash (no video capabilities), full HTML browser (with accelerometer), run multiple applications at the same time, Universal Search, IM, Palm Synergy brings your Outlook, Google, and Facebook calendars together.

You forgot to mention that that screen is a full capacitive touch screen (no hybrid stuff like BB). On the negative side you can’t use a stylus… yet (queue HTC’s patent pending on a stylus capable capacitive touch screen).
With all these “finger” devices I am beginning to feel quiet primitive. Why did we invent utensils for? So we don’t have to eat with out hands! Have you ever used your capacitive touch screen after eating chicken and poutine? Yuck! Anyway I feel much better using a stylus both from a hygienic and accuracy standpoint.

It also appears that bell is only selling the device with a 3 year contract on the website.

Can someone tell me why it’s always 3 years for us canadians really the exchange rate is not that bad, so why do we get shafted over our American neighbours … Basic math 15$ extrA here after the exchange rate some how adds up to cell providers making us sign for 3 years instead of 2 bah… And now we have to sign a 3 yeaR data option on top of all this.. So 2 3 year contracts for one cell phone!… *sigh*
end rant
Back on topic very nice phone, gonna go play with it today let’s see how it compares to my iPhone.

yeah I always wonder the same thing. That is one of my biggest grips about the Canadian cell phone industry. We’re one of the very few countries in the world where 3 year contracts are the standard.

Hopefully the “attract customer to carrier” feature is properly enabled. Bell sorely needs a boost.
