Tim Cook is stepping down as CEO of Apple

And John Ternus is stepping up effective September 1

Apple announced that Tim Cook will become the executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors, and John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become CEO effective September 1.

Apple says that Cook will continue his role as CEO through the summer and work closely with Ternus on a smooth transition. And in his new role, Cook will assist with different aspects of the company, such as engaging with policymakers around the world.

Cook has been at Apple since 1998 and became CEO in 2011, where he oversaw the introduction of services and products like Apple Watch, AirPods, Apple Vision Pro, iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple and Apple Music.

Ternus has been with Apple since 2001 as part of the product design team and became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2023. In 2021, he became senior vice president of Hardware Engineering and, throughout his tenure, has worked on iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch.

Ternus has also led the company’s focus in areas like reliability and durability, and has introduced new techniques that make Apple products more resilient.

Interestingly, as Tim Cook is stepping down on September 1, Ternus will lead the next Apple event, of course, with Cook’s guidance over the summer.
