It’s official: Disney+ is now requiring users in several countries, including Canada, to pay for password sharing.
In a new blog post, the streamer outlined how subscribers must purchase an ‘Extra Member’ with whom their account can be shared. Per the official Disney+ support page, here’s Canadian pricing for Extra Members per each Disney+ membership tier:
- Disney+ Standard with Ads — $6.99
- Disney+ Standard — $7.99
- Disney+ Premium — $7.99
The Extra Member will be able to use your account and access the same content and features as the main account holder, even if they’re not in the same household. However, streaming will only be available on one device at a time, and you may only add one Extra Member per account. The company says any additional people will have to sign up for their own Disney+ account, which starts at $7.99/month in Canada for Standard with Ads.
Here are the steps to add an Extra Member, per Disney’s support page:
- Go to DisneyPlus.com on a mobile or web browser and log in
- Select your Profile
- Select Account
- Select Extra Member in the Plans and Billing section
- Review the terms and select Continue
- Review the changes to your plan and select Agree & Subscribe
- Enter the email address of the Extra Member and select Send Invite
- Choose the existing Profile for the Extra Member or choose New Profile if they’re new to the subscription
- Select Next to send the invite
- On the confirmation page, select Got it! to complete the process
Notably, this is the same approach that Netflix took last year when it began charging $7.99 for its own Extra Members. This also comes after Disney officially began cracking down on password sharing in Canada last November. At the time, the company began emailing Canadian subscribers to notify them of its updated terms of service that explicitly prohibits password sharing, although it’s unclear how much it enforced it.
For what it’s worth, Netflix took several months — for many, at least — to begin requiring people to pay for the Extra Member to share their accounts. It remains to be seen how quickly Disney+ will begin actively forcing you to fork over the extra $7.99 to add an Extra Member.
