Samsung buys media streaming mSpot, will bundle it with future devices

Samsung has announced that it has purchased media streaming/digital locker service mSpot for an undisclosed price. The company, which started out as a Google Music-like digital music locker service, has expanded in recent months into the streaming movie downloads and radio services, with separate apps entitled mSpot Music, mSpot Radio and mSpot Movies.

The purchase will bolster Samsung’s “S Cloud” services which, while not a formal product, has been taking form recently with the announcement of the Galaxy S III. According to the press release, “The acquisition will provide a cloud-based entertainment experience of music, video and radio services for users of Samsung devices, while extending mSpot’s cloud and streaming solutions to a broader base of global entertainment fans. The combination will extend mSpot’s top class cloud and streaming services while further enhancing Samsung’s mobile and tablet device entertainment offerings. mSpot’s entertainment services will be a key integrated offering on newly announced Samsung mobile devices.”

It’s not certain whether the apps will be removed from Google Play or Apple’s App Store, but we’re willing to bet the experience will be optimized for Samsung devices in the near future.
