All iOS app updates will soon support iPhone X’s notch, says Apple

Apple has sent out a message informing developers that as of July 2018, all iOS app updates must support iOS 11’s development SDK, as well as the iPhone X’s taller, notched display.

iOS 11’s SDK was first introduced back in September of last year. The update brought along with it support for development tools like Core ML, ARKit, revamped camera APIs and drag and drop features for the iPad.

Apple says that all iOS apps will need to support this technology. iPhone X users on the other hand, will be pleased to know that all future app update will need to support Apple’s 10th-anniversary device.

Apps that need updated with iPhone X support even includes some of Apple’s own apps like iTunes Connect, iTunes Remote and the Beats Pill+ app.

While I haven’t encountered an iOS app in a number of months that doesn’t support the iPhone X’s taller display, this is definitely a step in the right direction for Apple’s ecosystem, especially considering Apple’s next generation of iPhones are expected to include similar notched screens.

At WWDC in early June we’ll learn more about what features Apple plans to include in the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 12.
