Bell MTS’ first goal: complete wireless coverage on an important Manitoba trade route

Bell

In an announcement made alongside Manitoba premier Brian Pallister and Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS) executives, Bell president Wade Oosterman announced that the company plans to extend its wireless coverage on Highway 75, Manitoba’s main transport connection to the U.S.

This move is part of Bell’s promised $1 billion investment in Manitoban infrastructure that was announced following the acquisition of MTS in early May 2016. Bell is expecting the $3.9 billion acquisition of MTS to close late 2016 or early 2017 pending regulatory approvals.

“Bell MTS will hit the ground running in Manitoba with major new investments in broadband communications, including the completion of full wireless coverage along this critical transportation route,” said Oosterman.

The announcement calls for three added Bell wireless sites linked by broadband fibre. With the new infrastructure in place, Bell MTS hopes to ensure 4G LTE and HSPA+ coverage all throughout the highway, which, it states, currently has three “limited coverage” areas, including one by the U.S. bordering cross at Emerson. Bell’s release does not state when it expects to complete the project.

Jay Forbes, president and CEO of MTS, also spoke at the event held in Morris, Manitoba, stating: “Completing wireless coverage along Highway 75 is a clear example of the benefits that come from Bell’s scale and resources, and from the company’s proven expertise in deploying outstanding broadband wireless networks across the country.”
