Navigation is one of the most important uses many people have for a smartphone, and as such, having access to navigation services at all times is vital. Unfortunately, while travelling, the places where it’s often easiest to get lost are also locations where cell service can’t be found.
Today, an app update is rolling out for Google Maps on Android that enables offline turn by turn navigation. Up until now, though you were able to save maps to your device, it wasn’t possible to receive directions without first connecting to a cell tower or Wifi network. The update also saves an index of locations in an offline area.
Google Maps will shift to offline mode if you lose your internet connection behind. If you find service, the full version of Maps, with live traffic conditions, will pop right back into action. Maps also download to your device over WiFi by default. An update to the iOS Google Maps app is planned at some point in the near future
