Motorola details the technology behind the Droid Turbo 2’s shatterproof display

Motorola ShatterShield

When Motorola announced the Droid Turbo 2 this morning, one of the more wild claims the company made about its upcoming smartphone is that it features the world’s first shatterproof display.

Dubbed Moto ShatterShield, and set to debut on the Droid Turbo 2 before making its way to future Motorola devices outside of the United States, the company says it has spent the past three years perfecting the technology and manufacturing process behind the new display tech.

In fact, Motorola is so confident in ShatterShield that, in the fine print of the official blog post introducing the tech, the company says the Droid Turbo 2 comes with a four year warranty that covers the display against shattering and cracking.

Consisting of five layers that work together to protect a phone’s display against drops, the Droid Turbo 2’s ShatterShield includes a couple of unique features. Its display, for instance, is flexible, allowing it to bend — but not break — during a drop. Additionally, the smartphone features two touch layers, a redundancy that’s not present in almost any other device. It also has two exterior lenses to further protect it against wear and tear.

As mentioned, the first Motorola phone to feature the ShatterShield technology is the Droid Turbo 2, the company’s recently announced Verizon-exclusive Android smartphone. On its website, Motorola says it plans to integrate the technology into future releases that make it outside of the United States.
