Google planning to launch affiliate program for the Play Store

Google Play

Google is planning to launch a new Google Play affiliate program, according to a report from 9to5Google.

Similar to the program that’s already available through the iTunes Store, this initiative will allow content providers to earn a commission whenever they help the Mountain View-based sell digital content through the Play Store. The program will function by allowing artists, labels and movie studios to post unique links that lead consumers to Google’s marketplace. If the person visiting the Play Store through one of these link then makes a purchase, the content provider will receive a percentage of the sale.

According to 9to5Google, the scope of the program is currently limited to music, movies and television shows, though apps and even hardware could later be added. That said, it’s important to note the initiative is still early in development; it could change significantly prior to launch, or even be cancelled.
