Google launches child-friendly “YouTube Kids” on Android and iOS

As expected, YouTube has launched a child-friendly version of its app called “YouTube Kids.” This is the first Google product that was built “from the ground up with little ones in mind,” and is available on Android and iOS devices.

The app is broken down into four content-appropriate categories for kids: Shows, Music, Learning and Explore. Users have the option the search for specific content, but that is limited to what is deemed “appropriate for the whole family.” The UI has big images and bold fonts for easy access and similar to the main YouTube app includes voice search so that your little one can still find the videos they want without typing or spelling.

As far as parental controls, Google has enabled a built-in timer that limits the amount of time on the app, and also alerts you when the session is over. Other controls include sound settings with the ability to turn off background music and sound effects. The search settings can also be controlled to only show pre-selected videos on the home screen.

Unfortunately, the YouTube Kids app is not yet available in Canada and is currently an exclusive to those in the United States.
