LG shows off smartphone display with world’s narrowest bezel

When we reviewed the LG G3 earlier this year, we were impressed by the slim bezels on the device. However, LG continues its work to improve in this area.

LG recently showed off what it claims is the world’s thinnest bezel on a smartphone display. The display you see in the image above is a 5.2-inch panel, which is a little smaller than the 5.5-inch display on LG’s current flagship. However, the true star here is the bezel which is just 0.7mm thick. Thinner than a credit card and 0.45mm thinner than the bezel on the G3 (see below).

LG was able to shrink the bezel by using its own Neo Edge technology. Neo Edge swaps double sided tape for adhesive when it comes to sealing the edges of the panel’s circuit board and backlight. This adhesive helps to block light leakage, is waterproof and dustproof, prevents corrosion, increases durability, and eliminates the need for a plastic guide panel.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen smartphone displays grow from 3.5- to 4-inches in size to almost 6 inches. The Nexus 6, Galaxy Note 4, the Ascend Mate 2, and the iPhone 6 Plus are all 5.5 inches or more in size. These might be extreme examples given that they’re classes as ‘phablets’ but the trend towards larger displays is undeniable.

As a result, manufacturers are more often trying to shrink the size of the phone around the display, especially to the left and right, where added width makes a phone more difficult to hold or use in one hand. The benefits of this are two fold: a large, clear display with a footprint or build that is more manageable than the display size suggests.

LG Display will start mass production of this new smartphone display in November. It’ll hit the Chinese market first but LG plans to actively promoting globally, presumably in preparation for worldwide availability.
