Android 17 Beta 1 isn’t out today anymore, coming soon

Google pulled the plug on the update

Earlier today, Google said that Android 17 Beta 1 is available; however, the company pulled the plug on the update, and it’s now delayed.

After a blog post detailing the first Android 17 Beta was removed, a Google spokesperson told Android Authority that “Android [17] Beta 1 will actually be coming soon, not today.”

However, we have learned a few things about the beta thanks to Google’s about-face. For one, instead of releasing specific developer betas, the company is adopting a continuous Canary channel for updates for developers.

When the update launches, it will push developers to adapt apps for big-screen devices like foldables and Android’s desktop mode. Further, Google says Android 17 will no longer be able to opt out of orientation and resizability requirements. This means that apps will need to support large-screen devices.

Android 17 Beta 1 will also have performance improvements, and a system that’s designed to reduce CPU usage and the ability to restrict notifications to help memory consumption. Additionally, Android 17 Beta 1 will offer new tools for media and camera apps, and the ability to offer smoother transitions between camera modes.

Google says that Android 17 Beta 1 “continues our work for more adaptable Android apps, introduces significant enhancements to camera and media capabilities, new tools for optimizing connectivity, and expanded profiles for companion devices.”

If you’re not a fan of betas, you’ll need to wait until June for the stable release. You can opt in to the Android 17 Beta 1 here when it is available.
