Canadians can now watch music videos on Spotify

Spotify is rolling out music videos in beta to Premium subscribers

Spotify is bringing the music videos beta to Canada after launching the feature in almost 100 markets last year.

The expansion gives more people access to Spotify’s catalogue of official music videos, including studio versions, live performances, and covers. Along with Canada, the music videos beta will expand to the U.S., Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Uganda, and Venezuela.

To start, Premium subscribers will be able to access the music video beta by the end of December. To access videos, open the Spotify app on your device of choice, select a supported track, and tap ‘Switch to video.’ (Spotify says music videos will work on its TV, desktop, iOS, and Android apps.)

When you do the above, the music video should start playing where the song left off. Users can also access a full-screen experience on mobile devices by rotating to landscape mode. And to go back to regular listening, just press ‘Switch to audio.’

There are a few different ways Spotify users can watch music videos. First, there will be a ‘Related Music Videos’ section that listeners can browser. Artist profiles will also have videos under the ‘Music’ tab. Listeners will be able to watch by genre video era playlists like 90s Video Hits or Hip-Hop Throwbacks.

While I’m sure this update will make music video fans happy, I’m sure it’ll also prove frustrating for some. I recently started listening to more podcasts on Spotify, but have been increasingly annoyed by Spotify’s insistence on playing the video stream of podcasts. As someone who typically listens to podcasts in the background while I game or work, it drives me nuts to have the video playing with no easy way to shut it off. Here’s hoping Spotify’s music video push isn’t as annoying.
