Telus launches Complete plans with five-year price lock

The Complete plans also include reduced roaming rates and cheaper device financing

Telus launched a new tier of plans with bonus features like a five-year price lock, premium financing, and reduced roaming prices.

Dubbed ‘5G+ Complete’ plans, Telus bills them as designed to “protect you from surprises.” Features include the aforementioned five-year price lock, $5/day Easy Roam, premium financing, and unlimited long-distance calling to 27 countries.

The price lock is perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of Telus’ new ‘Complete’ plans, especially given Canadian carriers’ penchant for increasing customers’ bills every few months. The terms and conditions on Telus’ website note that the price lock “applies to the Monthly Charge for eligible post-paid mobility plans, before any applicable taxes, other government imposed fees, discounts, promotions and bill credits, for a duration of 5 years starting from the time of eligible plan activation.”

It also notes that prices for other features, add-ons, and pay-per-use rates — for example, Easy Roam — are not guaranteed during the price lock. Telus can also remove the lock if customers change plans, renew their service, or otherwise no longer meet the eligibility criteria.

On one hand, this sounds great and might entice some customers who are tired of surprise bill increases. At the same time, Telus isn’t the first Canadian to promise no price hikes, and almost all of them come up with sneaky ways to raise your bill, no matter what guarantees they make. In other words, I won’t trust this price lock until 2030.

Unlimited long distance, discounted Easy Roam, and more

Regarding the long-distance calling, the 27 countries include: the U.S., China, Hong Kong, India, Mexico, Bangladesh, the U.K., Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, France Germany, Japan, South Korea, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan.

Discounted Easy Roam is another interesting perk. Telus currently charges $14/day for U.S. roaming and $16/day for international roaming, so $5/day Easy Roam is definitely a discount. Still, if you travel a lot, getting something like a Canada/U.S. plan or picking up a local eSIM might still be cheaper. But for short trips, the $5/day cost could be fine.

Finally, there’s the premium device financing perk. Telus doesn’t share much information about it on its website, but it essentially appears to be an additional discount applied to the device price that brings down the monthly financing cost. There doesn’t seem to be any logic to the discount amount, but it reduces the monthly financing cost by about half in the cases I looked at.

For example, with an iPhone 16, the standard financing costs $48.38/mo, while premium financing is $28.38/mo. When you look at the price breakdown for both, the only difference is that the premium financing includes a $480 ‘smartphone discount’ — $20 over 24 months is $480. Similarly, the Galaxy S25 is $49.96/mo standard financing, or $20/mo premium financing.

No big changes to plan prices… yet

Of course, to get the cheaper ‘premium’ financing, you need to get one of the Complete plans, which generally cost more. Here’s a breakdown of the plan prices (note each price includes a $10/mo discount for using pre-authorized bank payments):

  • 5G+ Complete – $75/100GB (2Gbps speed)
  • 5G+ Complete Canada/U.S. – $85/175GB (2Gbps speed)
  • 5G+ Complete Canada/U.S./Mexico/Caribbean – $100/250GB (2Gbps speed)
  • 5G Standard – $70/80GB (250Mbps speed cap)
  • 5G Standard – $65/60GB (250Mbps speed cap)

If you want to bring your own phone (BYOP), you can knock another $5 off those plans.

Telus’ plans are generally in line with what you’d get from the other members of the Big Three. Rogers and Bell have similar plans that are all generally within $5 of each other. However, I’m not sure any of the ‘Complete’ plan perks are enough to win customers over. Freedom Mobile, for example, also has a price guarantee and is offering cheaper plans with huge data buckets. Plus, Freedom’s plans include Canada/U.S./Mexico roaming built-in, and many have ‘Roam Beyond’ features with roaming in over 120 destinations — a lot better than $5/day roaming.
