The first trailer for the Minecraft movie is absolutely horrifying

Just... why?

Jack Black Minecraft Steve

The first trailer for Warner Bros.’ live-action Minecraft movie has been revealed, and it sure is something.

The film, simply titled A Minecraft Movie, follows four misfits as they’re pulled into the iconic Minecraft Overworld and meet none other than the expert crafter himself, Steve. As far as premises go, that’s about what you’d expect from an adaptation of the beloved sandbox game from Xbox-owned Mojang Studios.

But in practice, pretty much everything about the film just looks… garish. First, it has some of the worst green screen work in recent memory (or maybe ever?), with star Jason Momoa and co. looking like they’re in an SNL skit rather than a big-budget Hollywood film. Then there’s the fact that “Steve” — one of most iconic characters in gaming — is literally just Jack Black’s usual disheveled look plus a blue shirt. That’s to say nothing of recognizable creatures like the Creeper looking decidedly off as they’ve been turned from low-detailed block figures into what are effectively hyper-realistic plush toys.

It all begs the question of why this is a live-action movie to begin with. The Super Mario Bros. Movie might be creatively uninspired in many ways, but it at least features gorgeous animation that brings the Mushroom Kingdom to life in stunning detail. That approach also let you better focus on the likes of Jack Black’s electric vocal performance as Bowser, rather than be distracted by him wearing something akin to a low-rent Spirit Halloween cosplay as we see in A Minecraft Movie.

Given that A Minecraft Movie hails from Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, it all just seems like a big joke. Honestly, it just seems more like this year’s abysmal Borderlands movie than last year’s incredible The Last of Us series. But hey, hopefully it ends up being good?

A Minecraft Movie will hit theatres on April 4th, 2025.
