‘Subway Surfers’ was the most downloaded mobile game of the decade: report

A pair of new reports look back on the biggest mobile games and apps of 2019 and the decade as a whole

Subway Surfers

Danish game developer Kiloo’s Subway Surfers was downloaded more times around the world than any other mobile title between 2010 and 2019, according to a new report from App Annie.

To mark the end of both 2019 and the decade, the app analytics firm has put out two different reports measuring mobile app and game performance.

According to App Annie, Subway Surfers saw a significant boost in popularity in India, which helped propel the game to the top of the charts. American publishing giant Activision’s Candy Crush Saga was the second-most downloaded mobile game of the decade, with Raleigh, North Carolina-based Imangi’s Temple Run placing third.

Downloads are only part of the equation, though. Overall, Finnish studio Supercell’s Clash of Clans brought in the most consumer spend between 2010 and 2019. Japanese studio Mixi’s Monster Strike generated the second-highest amount of consumer spend, followed by Candy Crush Saga.

In terms of most-downloaded 2019 titles, Istanbul-based Good Job Games claimed the top three spots with Colour Bump 3D, Fun Race 3D and Run Race 3D. It’s worth noting that this year’s Call of Duty: Mobile from Activision and Mario Kart Tour from Nintendo had the first- and second-biggest mobile game launches of all time, respectively.

However, Call of Duty: Mobile was only the fifth-most downloaded mobile game this year, while Mario Kart Tour was the eighth. Having said that, both games came out a week apart in the fall, meaning they haven’t been on the market for too long.

Apps

Facebook had the four-most downloaded apps of the decade — Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. None of these are necessarily surprising, given the popularity of social media apps. For context, Snapchat placed fifth and Twitter came in at 10th.

Meanwhile, Netflix brought in the most in-app spending, followed by Tinder in second place and Pandora Music in third.

In terms of 2019’s most downloaded apps, specifically, Chinese developer YY Inc.’s Likee and Noizz apps were number one and two, respectively. Rounding out the top three was Chinese company Bytedance’s Helo — Share Your Life.

Finally, Google-owned YouTube and Google One were first and second with respect to the highest-earning 2019 apps, while China-based Baidu ranked third with its IQIYI app.
