Waterloo-based BlackBerry has embedded its QNX software in more than 120 million cars, the company announced today.

BlackBerry stated that QNX in automotive has doubled in the last three years. The company’s tech is designed to protect hardware, software, applications and end-to-end systems from cyberattacks.

“As cars are increasingly driven by software, our customers and partners rely on BlackBerry QNX technologies to provide them with the safety-certified and secure technology platform on which the future of the automotive industry is being built,” said John Chen, executive chairman and CEO of BlackBerry, in a press statement.

QNX is BlackBerry’s Unix-like real-time operating system, designed for use in embedded technologies.

Embedded technologies are generally integrated into complete devices. These devices often contain mechanical parts, like an automobile.

Automotive manufacturers use BlackBerry QNX in advanced driver assistance systems, digital instrument clusters and hands-free systems. Additionally, connectivity modules and infotainment systems use QNX technologies.

Cars from Audi, BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, KIA, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Toyota and Volkswagen use these systems.
