Nintendo is partnering with mobile game developer Cygames for a new action RPG designed for iOS and Android.
The game, called Dragalia Lost, is set to be released in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau this summer, with a launch set for North America and Europe shortly after. Similar to the Japanese gaming giant’s partnership with DeNA, the company says it has plans to “jointly operate” the title with Cygames, in order to deliver the “shared vision of a new gaming experience with worldwide appeal.”
Nintendo has also acquired a 5 percent stake in Cygames.
Cygames is known for Granblue Fantasy, a popular mobile RPG in Japan. The game allows players to unlock new characters through in-game currency that can be purchased with real money — this mechanic is similar to the ‘loot boxes’ we see in free-to-play games like Fortnite and Overwatch. Nintendo also features a similar loot box mechanic in mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes.
Nintendo recently announced its 2017 earnings, revealing that the company earned $1.6 billion USD in profit in 2017.
