Twitter’s rolling out a sweeping set of changes to its mobile apps, including a brand new typeface and more intuitive icons.
For now, Twitter’s redesign is only available for iOS, and for good reason. In the case of features like a side navigation menu, Android users have had a chance to use the redesigned Twitter for almost a year now.
Like on Android, the iOS Twitter app’s navigation menu will provide quick access to profiles, additional accounts, settings and privacy.
“A new side navigation menu and fewer tabs are the bottom of our app equals less clutter and easier browsing,” reads an excerpt from the media release.
Additionally, links to articles and websites now open within Safari’s viewer in the Twitter app.
A new feature coming to both Android and iOS — but notably not to the web app or the Twitter Lite app — is the ability to monitor replies, retweets and like counts in real-time. These updates occur instantly, allowing users to “see conversations as they’re happening live.”
Small usability redesigns have also been implemented.
“For example, people thought the reply icon, an arrow, meant delete or go back to a previous page,” reads another excerpt. “We switched to a speech bubble, a symbol most know and love.”
Icons are also now lighter, “for more seamless interaction.”
Additionally, accessibility choices like increased colour contrast and the option to always open links in Safari have also been added.
Finally, Twitter’s refined its typeface to make it more consistent, while also bolding headlines to make it easier for users to focus on information in any given tweet.
“Also, rounded profile photos make it clearer to see what’s being said and who’s saying it,” reads an excerpt.
Users will be able to experience these changes for themselves “over the coming days and weeks.”
