It’s that time of year again — no, not Halloween. It’s that special time of year when The Walking Dead returns to television.
The two are certainly related though. What better time for zombies than the spookiest month of the year? That’s partly what made the AMC show’s Dead Yourself app so popular when it first launched in 2013. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a fan of the show or not, who doesn’t want envision themselves half decomposed and ravenous for human flesh?
The app is simple to use and addictive. Launch directs you to a screen with an overlay of a skull that you must line up with your own face. Once you’ve tweaked the location of the eyes and mouth, you’re able to move on to the settings, where you can choose various effects for your eyes and mouth, and select various gory accessories and filters.
What makes it really captivating — some might say disturbing — is that this representation of yourself draws ragged breaths, growls and moves. Once your happy with the unflattering portrait, you can choose to share it as a photo, video or GIF, sans the obvious branding that was required in earlier iterations.
