Alcatel — best known in these parts for providing the basis of BlackBerry’s latest Android smartphone, the OneTouch Idol 4-inspired DTEK50 — just became the latest company to release its own virtual reality headset.
Dubbed Vision, where Alcatel’s headset is different from other entry-level headsets we’ve seen is that it does not require a smartphone. Instead, Vision has a built-in eight-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, Bluetooth connectivity, as well as a number of spatial sensors. Two 3.8-inch AMOLED 1,080 x 1,020 resolution panels create a 2,160 x 2,040 viewing field.
The company says the Vision can be comfortably worn for two to three hours, and is usable both with and without glasses.
Alcatel did not reveal how much the headset will cost, though according to Engadget, it could cost as much as $500 to $600 USD. Moreover, the headset won’t be Daydream compatible. To make up for that fact, Alcatel promises Vision will ship with a number of preinstalled apps, games and video content made by the likes of Jaunt VR and Fraunhofer.
We’ve reached out to Alcatel to find out if the Vision will come to Canada. We’ll update this article once we hear back.
