To date, Telus has invested over $40 billion in Alberta and the money will continue to pour in until 2019. The company announced today plans to invest a whopping $4.5 billion over the next four years to build out infrastructure across the province.
Telus says it will invest $900 million this year to build out its fibre optic network. In addition, Telus, which is now Canada’s second largest carrier in terms of subscribers, will spend some of the money to build LTE towers that support faster network speeds and expand its coverage in rural areas.
While its competitors have focussed on media assets and sports teams, Telus’ long-term play has been healthcare and to bring Canada’s health initiatives into this century with more modern electronic medical records. Telus says it will work with continue to work with the Alberta government “to introduce online Personal Health Records.”
Finally, Telus will be “investing in Internet-connected devices to promote the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Alberta, driving solutions that will enable all sectors to further their global competitive advantage, reduce their environmental impact, and increase worker safety.”
