Classic RPG Final Fantasy VII lands on iOS

Final Fantasy VII

One of the true classics of the Playstation era of gaming is at long last available on mobile phones.

On Wednesday, Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII to the iTunes App Store.

Like most titles from the Japanese publisher, at $18.99 Final Fantasy VII is priced at a premium. Still, if there’s a game where that price is worth it, it’s most certainly this one.

Installing FFVII requires an initial 4GB of storage, though once it’s installed, the game only takes up 2GB. At launch, it supports the iPhones 5S and higher, the third-generation iPad, as well as the iPad Mini 2 and higher. Moreover, all of the devices listed above need to be on iOS 8 to run the game.

A couple of additional notes on the game: this is a mobile port of the 2013 PC re-release, not the original 1997 Playstation release. Despite that fact, the game still shows its age; the original was released at a time when game developers had just started to create games with polygonal art. Moreover, the mobile port utilizes a series of on-screen virtual buttons to make for the lack of a mouse and keyboard. Being mostly a turn-based game, that’s not a huge problem. Lastly, this new version of the game includes the option to reduce the rate at which the player encounters random enemies while adventuring. This is a welcome concession to the game’s new mobile nature and for those without much time to work through it; anyone that simply wants to experience the game’s story can do so without much fuss. If you don’t mind waiting a bit and have access to a Playstation 4, Square Enix announced a proper remake of the game at Sony’s E3 press conference earlier in the summer. It doesn’t have a release date yet, but already looks exceptional.
