Facebook Messenger has over 700 million monthly users and the massive social network recently announced those not using the app can sign up with just a phone number. If the latest rumours are true, Facebook will be unveiling a digital assistant that would rival Apple’s Siri, Google Now, and Microsoft’s Cortana.
According to The Information, Facebook has internally named its digital assistant “Moneypenny,” a nod to James Bond’s all-knowing assistant. The report indicates that Facebook is testing Moneypenny internally and will see a public release in a manner quite unlike what we’ve seen from Apple and Microsoft. Rather than focussing on productivity and quick answers like Siri and Cortana, Moneypenny will reportedly tap other Facebook Messenger contacts — so real people — to ask for help “researching and ordering products and services, among other tasks.”
While there are no dates as to when or if Moneypenny will go live, the report also noted that “It’s also unclear what features the service will begin with and how exactly Facebook will fulfill requests.”
