Every year, mobile phone makers strive to produce thinner devices. Advancements in mobile technology mean they can fit all the necessary components into packages slimmer than we thought possible even two years ago. Lately, though, we’ve seen several manufacturers make certain concessions in order to fit their technology into a slimmer chassis.
Take the Oppo R5, the world’s thinnest phone. It measures in at a scant 4.85 mm but to make that possible Oppo had to remove the headphone jack. To plug in a headset, users have to connect a MicroUSB adaptor or use Bluetooth headphones. Apple has also received a lot of criticism with the iPhone 6 camera module, which protrudes out from the back of the case. Now it looks like Samsung could do the same thing with the Galaxy S6.
GSMArena has what it claims are schematics for the Galaxy S6, which is set to be announced at Mobile World Congress. These drawings show a device that measures just 6.91 mm thick, which is only 0.01 mm thicker than the iPhone 6. As a result of this ultra-thin profile, we can see that the camera module has that same ‘outie’ quality that we saw on the iPhone.
A new image, courtesy of CNET, echos this camera design and also shows off how the Galaxy S6 and possibly the Galaxy Edge would look in a case.
We’re the first to fawn over super thin and light devices, but the downside of this type of design is that you risk scratching up the camera if you don’t use a case. Of course, there’s a chance these schematics aren’t real, but the fact that Apple has already proved people will buy a device with this type of design makes it a much more attractive option for other OEMs.
