BlackBerry posts $148 million net loss in fiscal Q3, reports 1.9 million devices sold

BlackBerry Classic review

BlackBerry announced its fiscal 2015 Q3 results today and revealed a $148 million net loss on revenues of $793 million, down from $916 million in Q2. Analysts were expecting BlackBerry to come in around $931 million revenue for the quarter, so it’ll be interesting to see how its stock performs today. As of November 29th, BlackBerry had a cash and investments balance of $3.1 billion.

BlackBerry CEO John Chen said, “We achieved a key milestone in our eight quarter plan with positive cash flow. We also attained another important milestone in the release of our new enterprise software products and devices. Our focus now turns to expanding our distribution and driving revenue growth.”

BlackBerry recently launched the 4.5-inch BlackBerry Passport, but there was no word on how many devices were sold. BlackBerry did state it sold approximately 1.9 million BlackBerry smartphones in Q3, “which included shipments made and recognized prior to the third quarter and which reduced the Company’s inventory in channel.” BlackBerry sold 2.1 million smartphones in the previous quarter.

It seems that BlackBerry is turning around from simply relying on its hardware and turning into a software and services organization. The company noted that revenue breakdown was approximately 46% for hardware, 46% for services and 8% for software. BlackBerry said that in Q3 there was a total of 6.8 million licenses for BES10, which is a 100% increase from Q2 2014, and “over 30% of total licenses traded in from competitors’ Mobile Device Management platforms.”
