Sphero’s Amazon Prime Ground parody hits the right note

Sphero is a toy: it rolls and spins and lights up and is reminiscent of a Hot Wheel car, but controlled by an iOS or Android device.

But in a parody video released today, Orbotix re-imagines its latest engineering marvel, Sphero 2.0, as an alternative to flying drones for shipment delivery. Dubbed Amazon Prime Ground, the short clip posits using Sphero to roll around town delivering small boxes of goods to people.

Of course, the video is more tongue-in-cheek than bold-and-scary (like the original), and sells the idea of Sphero as something more than just a toy.

We had a chance to play with the $129.95 Sphero 2.0 earlier this year, and came away incredibly impressed not only with the finished product, which provides more than just hours of mindless fun, but the company, Orbotix, which tasks robots with being quietly engaging without being intrusive.

Sphero 2.0 is available in Canada through the Apple Store, Future Shop and Best Buy.
