Gmail for iOS gains new iPad interface, design improvements

Gmail for iOS has gone through a bit of an overhaul, especially on iPad, with the introduction of a left-side navigation bar and fullscreen portrait view.

The app does improve the design from the previous version too much, but it’s clear that it has been optimized for performance — it lags much less than before, and scrolling is far smoother. It feels less like an HTML5 webview and more like a native app.

While it’s disappointing not to see background updating on iOS 7, and there is still no swipe right to return to the previous screen like in many modern apps, it’s great to see Google steadily improving its mail experience on iPhones and iPads.

Update: Looks like the background update feature was’t posted in the change log, but the feature is available in Settings/General/Background Updates.
