Kobo, the popular Canadian eBook publisher and app developer, promised a BlackBerry 10 app earlier this year. It already has apps available for iOS, Android, OS X and Windows, so it makes sense that the next platform to support, being Canadian and all, would be BlackBerry 10.
The app is a port of the company’s excellent Android version, which is slightly disappointing, but I suppose it’s better — as with any other Android port on BlackBerry 10 — than not having one at all. Performance on the Q10 and Z10 is relatively smooth, though animations feel quite choppy at times.
Of course, you can purchase books through KoboBooks.com and automatically sync them to your device, and there are many font choices to accommodate your particular style. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the Android player, smooth page transition animations are not available on this version; we’ll have to wait until BlackBerry’s Android SDK is updated to be based on Jelly Bean for that.
Until then, Kobo is a great alternative to Kindle, which is also an Android port on the system, and certainly a worthy way to fill your time while on the go.
