Instagram could come to Windows Phone before Android

Chalk this up to a big fat rumour, but nothing is impossible in the world of Microsoft. According to Fast Company, Microsoft has been wooing the fast-growing photo sharing team in an attempt to bring the marquee iOS app to Windows Phone before it arrives on Android.

This wouldn’t be the first time Microsoft has paid its way into the App Marketplace. Rumour has it that the company spent millions of dollars coaxing popular apps like Foursquare, Yelp and Twitter into the Marketplace for its October 2010 release, and since then has been courting high-profile dev teams. Instagram is one of the iPhone’s most popular apps and would mesh very well with the relatively media-focused, camera-friendly Windows Phone interface. All Windows Phone devices are required to have a dedicated shutter button, and it would be great to see Instagram tied to that instant-shutter feature the platform prizes so highly.

CEO Kevin Systrom has not commented on the rumour, claiming that the only app they’ve officially committed to is its upcoming Android variant. But it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Microsoft swoops in and makes a Windows Phone version happen.
