Report: Canadians still pay the most for wireless

Canadians have the highest monthly cellphone bill in the world. This is certainly not a surprise and there has been several reports indicating this very unfortunate truth. Yet another report has surfaced, this time by the New America Foundation’s Open Technology Initiative (OTI) that yet again shows Canada taking the number one spot for the highest rates.

The report studied 11 counties (Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Sweden, Taiwan, U.K., United States and Canada) and compared several mobile plans to determine “cell phone voice, text and data services for prepaid, regular postpaid, and unlimited postpaid plans”. The results are based on September 2010 rates and is a bit skewed as it only compares one wireless carrier, Rogers – who tends to have somewhat higher monthly pricing compared to other carriers. The Foundation does not take into consideration that there are now other options apart from the Big 3 and their flanker brands such as Wind Mobile, Mobilicity and Public Mobile that offer Unlimited Monthly plans (Talk and Text and Data).

However, the report reveals that a complete cell phone package that includes voice, text, and data Canadians pay the most at $67.50 (USD), followed by the United States at $59.99 (USD) and Finland at $40.10 (USD). Breaking it down even further shows that our voice and text plans are cheaper than other countries but our data plans is where we are getting shafted on. A whopping $24.00 for 500 megabytes (MB) per month… compared to India at $2.10 for 5120MB ($0.0004/MB).
