Amazon is pulling out of Quebec over the next two months, which includes closing one fulfilment centre, two sorting centres and three delivery stations. These are all the Amazon businesses in Quebec. The company denies that this has anything to do with unionizing one of its warehouses in 2024 and told CTV News it plans to return to its third-party model “supported by small local businesses.”
This will mean that 1,700 Quebec residents will lose their full-time jobs, and 250 temporary seasonal workers won’t be able to turn to Amazon for employment in 2025. An Amazon spokesperson says that impacted employees are going to receive compensation packages that can include up to 14 weeks of pay and transitional benefits.
That said, Quebec residents will still be able to order from the retail giant, but their orders will be delivered by a third-party company instead of Amazon. The company used this delivery method up until 2020, so delivery times should shift back to whatever they were during that time.
