Microsoft confirmed that it has ended production of its HoloLens 2 headset and plans to end support by the end of 2027.
The company confirmed the details in an email to The Verge, writing:
“Microsoft is no longer producing Microsoft HoloLens 2, and we have signaled a last time to buy for customers and partners. Support for HoloLens 2, including security updates will end on December 31, 2027.
“We will continue to invest in mixed reality opportunities with first-party software solutions and services, partnering with the broader mobile phone and mixed reality hardware ecosystem. In addition, we remain fully committed to the IVAS program with the US Department of Defense.”
The news comes after a tumultuous few years for Microsoft’s HoloLens team. In 2022, the team’s former boss, Alex Kipman, left Microsoft following misconduct allegations. The HoloLens team was also hit with layoffs in 2023 and 2024.
And while Microsoft said it will continue investing in mixed reality, it’s unclear if we’ll ever see another headset from the company, at least for businesses or consumers. Microsoft is clearly going to continue working with the military, which plans to spend up to $21.9 billion USD (about $29.5 billion CAD) over 10 years through the IVAS contract.
