Ubisoft has delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows to February 14th, 2025. The Ubisoft Quebec-developed open-world action-adventure game was previously set to release on November 15th, 2024.

In a statement posted on social media, Ubisoft cited a need for “more time to polish and refine the experience, pushing further some of our key features.” The company also noted in a separate press release that “the learnings from the Star Wars Outlaws release led us to provide additional time to further polish the title.” The Ubisoft Toronto co-developed Star Wars game released last month to generally positive reviews, but criticism was levied at technical issues, including those that made players restart the entire campaign.

Ubisoft also says everyone who has pre-ordered the game will be refunded, while future pre-orders will be given the first expansion for free. The company says this is part of a pivot from “the traditional Season Pass model.”

Additionally, Ubisoft has confirmed a Steam version of Shadows, joining the previously confirmed platforms PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, macOS and iPadOS.

Formally unveiled back in MayAssassin’s Creed Shadows marks the series’ first — and long-awaited — Japan-set mainline title. Set in feudal Japan, the game follows two protagonists: Naoe, a fictional female shinobi, and Yasuke, an African samurai inspired based on the historical figure of the same name. Players will control both characters, with the former emphasizing a stealth-centric playstyle and the latter focused on weapon-based combat.

Notably, developer Ubisoft Quebec is also behind fan-favourite Assassin’s Creed games Odyssey (set in ancient Greece) and Syndicate (Victorian London). The latter game also featured two protagonists, so it will be interesting to see how the Canadian studio has built on that groundwork in Shadows.

Interestingly, the Shadows delay comes one day after PlayStation unveiled its highly-anticipated Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yōtei. That samurai game is also set to release in 2025, so it remains to be seen how much space there will be between them.
