One of the many Galaxy S4 accessories we saw today included a non-descript wireless charging plate, much akin to the many other Qi-based products we’ve seen from other OEMs. What this means is that Samsung has built wireless charging into the Galaxy S4 spec, but it will cost you — up to $100 in some cases. Carriers have the choice of purchasing the optional wireless charging-enabled battery cover, but it’s not yet known whether it will work with the Qi standard.
The Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920 independently thrust wireless charging into the spotlight in the past six months, but it could be the Galaxy S4 — if carriers decide to push it — to finally bring it into the mainstream. I cannot tell you how convenient it has been to charge my phone wirelessly in recent months; just place it down on a small disc and you’re good to go.
We’ll know more in the coming weeks how much the accessories will cost, but it’s looking like the back cover will be $39.95 and the charging plate will be $59.95.
