Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro benchmarked, smashes previous records

Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, the APQ8064, combines four 1.5Ghz Krait cores and the new Adreno 320 GPU for some of the fastest tablet performance ever seen. This combination, which eschews an integrated baseband, will not be available initially for phones, but will target high-end tablets.

Results are pretty jaw-dropping. While the general consensus is that Apple’s third-generation iPad is still faster, the Krait+Adreno 320 combo comes close in many respects and surpasses it in a few as well. For Android tablets, this will by far be the best combination in the coming year, unless Texas Instruments or Nvidia releases something pretty special.

You can see from the benchmark above just how much faster the Mobile Development Platform (Qualcomm’s test tablet) is than the Tegra 3 and even the company’s own Adreno 225 which runs inside the North American HTC One X and Galaxy S III.

There is no doubt that phone manufacturers are going to be implementing this chip combination into devices as soon as the thermal properties can be sorted out and there are no issues with battery life.
