Metrotube, Windows Phone’s best YouTube app, returns to the Marketplace

Metrotube was removed from the Windows Phone Marketplace on January 1st as they could not get access to the official HD YouTube API, somewhat limiting the functionality of the otherwise-fantastic piece of software. Today the app returns with an unofficial workaround, and a plea from the creators to make it the most popular YouTube app on Windows Phone so maybe, just maybe, Google will stand up and take note.

The company, Lazyworm Apps, posted on its official page, a reason for its sudden demise and reluctant return:

As many already know, we opted to pull Metrotube from the Marketplace at the start of this year.

As stated in the letter we wrote to our customers, this was due to workarounds we were using and the fact that we couldn’t ensure the future of the app.

Our goal from the very beginning was to deliver a rich YouTube experience that could be officially promoted by Microsoft (or Google). It was for this reason that we never supported features such as video download or the playback of non-mobile content and why we have spent the past 7 months investigating alternative avenues of delivering the same rich experience via official means.

We were truly hopeful that we could resolve these issues however it has gotten to the stage where we’ve exhausted all of our options.Essentially, we have done everything in our power to go through official channels without any luck. We don’t want to see the project that has consumed a year and half of our lives go to waste like this and so we’ve decided to re-launch Metrotube for free.

We hope the app receives a big enough response from the Windows Phone community justifying the need for Google or Microsoft to show us a little more support.

The app returns still unfinished, but it blows away the official version on Windows Phone, which is merely a wrapper for YouTube’s HTML5-based mobile page.

If you’re rocking a Windows Phone, download it from the Marketplace.
