Rumour: Google branded tablet to have a 7-inch display, run OS 4.0, and sell below $199

Google’s Eric Schmidt recently stated that “In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality”. Schmidt gave no other insight, thus rumours quickly spread of a “Nexus” tablet to compete against all the other Android-powered tablets that clutter the market. Now an overseas report from Digitimes suggests that Google is preparing to release a 7-inch tablet to go head-to-head with Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire, which is not available in Canada, but runs off the Android OS. According to “sources from Google’s upstream supply chain” this new Google tablet will be launching in the March/April time frame, run Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and be priced under $199 (USD).

Does a Google branded 7-inch ICS tablet priced below $199 strike you as “a tablet of the highest quality”? Possibly. RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook – which is a well designed and high quality tablet – is selling for $199 these days.

What do you think?
