Bioware Montreal is reportedly restructuring, Mass Effect series put on hold

Some members of the Canadian development team at BioWare Montreal — the studio behind the not very well-received Mass Effect: Andromeda — are reportedly being retasked to other projects at Electronic Arts (EA).

Kotaku, citing anonymous sources, says that the studio is being “scaled down,” with the Mass Effect series reportedly set to go on “hiatus.”

The director of BioWare Montreal, Yanick Roy, spun a different story, in a statement sent to Polygon.

“Our teams at BioWare and across EA put in tremendous effort bringing Mass Effect: Andromeda to players around the world. Even as BioWare continues to focus on the Mass Effect: Andromeda community and live service, we are constantly looking at how we’re prepared for the next experiences we will create.”

A significant update was recently issued to Mass Effect: Andromeda designed to solve multiplayer balancing issues and in-game cinematic problems. The patch’s description, however, also seems to indicate that updates will continue to roll out to the title, therefore Roy’s statement is likely to be true.

Roy did, however, also admit that given the collaborative nature of the shared studio space, some BioWare team members are now working on projects with another EA developer, Motive.

With our BioWare and Motive teams sharing studio space in Montreal. We have BioWare team members joining Motive projects that are underway,” said Roy.

Motive is working with DICE to develop Star Wars Battlefront 2, the eagerly anticipated sequel to last year’s polarizing Battlefront.
