Apple extends USB-C dongle discounts until March 2017

Apple has extended a discount program for its USB-C dongles in Canada, which are required to operate most peripherals and accessories with its new line of MacBook Pros.

The company’s newest lineup of MacBook Pros feature two to four Thunderbolt 3 enabled USB-C ports and a 3.5mm headphone jack, depending on the model and no other port connections. This has led many users to lead the “dongle life” through the use of multiple USB-C adapters, or dongles, which can add up to a significant cost for the consumer.

In response to negative feedback regarding the extra cost, Apple announced it would cut the price of its dongles in November 2016, but had only promised a price reduction through the end of 2016. The company’s website now reads that the discount will continue until March 2017.

“We recognize that many users, especially pros, rely on legacy connectors to get work done today and they face a transition,” the company said in a statement at the time. “We want to help them move to the latest technology and peripherals, as well as accelerate the growth of this new ecosystem.”
