Popular torrent search engine Torrentz.eu goes offline

Torrentz, an exceedingly popular meta-search engine that drew together results for torrent searches from a variety of other search engines, has shut down with no forewarning or explanation.

A shell of the site remains with the text “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines.” When a search is attempted, the site returns: “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.”

This comes mere weeks after the shut down of popular torrent hosting site Kickass Torrents and the arrest of its alleged owner, Artem Vaulin, in Poland. Since its takedown, the market was quickly flooded by various clones, mirroring the original site’s database. It’s yet to be seen what sites will step into Torrentz’s shoes and rise to prominence as a trusted torrent search engine.

Established in 2003, Torrentz had 15.8 million unique visitors in August 2015, according to comScore. It claimed to index nearly 32 million active torrents via 28 major piracy websites.
