First details on rumoured Galaxy S7 emerge

Galaxy S6

The dust left after the launch of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ may still be settling, but that doesn’t mean Samsung isn’t already planning its next release. Thanks to Samsung-focused website SamMobile, we have our first details on said device, the Galaxy S7.

According to SamMobile, Samsung’s internal codename for the smartphone is Project Lucky. Seven being a lucky number in many cultures, the reason for the codename should be obvious, though it may also have something to do with how confident the company is feeling about the phone’s prospects.

In terms of internals, the S7 will feature the company’s new Exynos 8890 system on a chip. This chipset has already made its way into Geekbench database. Running the benchmarking tool’s standard set of tests, the processor did exceptionally well, scoring high scores in both single core and multi-core tests. That said, SamMobile notes that in North America some variants of the device may ship with a Snapdragon 820 SoC instead. Canadian consumers likely won’t see this version of the phone since the main reason Samsung would turn to Qualcomm for chip is to make its phone compatible with networks in the United States that are still on the CDMA standard.

Samsung is also said not to be resting on its laurels when it the phone’s camera. The company has developed a new 20-megapixel camera that includes a new type of feature called an “all lens cover”. However, it’s currently unclear what this feature will bring to the table.

Last but not least, there’s also the chance the S7 may see the return of expandable storage to Samsung’s line of flagship smartphones. Like the S6, the company is designing the S7 to take advantage of its own Universal Flash Storage 2.0 standard. While UFS 2.0 provides significant gains in terms of internal SSD performance, it has issues interfacing with the memory controllers found in microSD cards. However, Samsung may have designed a workaround for this problem.
