Lake Ontario now ‘Lake America’ on Apple Maps in the U.S. too

Canadians still get the true name

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” on August 27.

Since then, Google Maps has changed the name of the lake depending on which side of the border you’re on. And following suit, Apple has now also changed Lake Ontario to Lake America on its Maps app as well.

The Lake Ontario label changes depending on where you’re based.

  • Canadian users will see Lake Ontario
  • U.S. users will see Lake America
  • Everyone else will see Lake Ontario (Lake America)

Maps did change Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, so I’m not too surprised by the update, even though I really wished the company stood up against the man.

Of course, we at MobileSyrup would never call it Lake America and will be sticking with Lake Ontario. Most people in the country have made fun of Trump, and thankfully our government continues to support the true Canadian lake title ‘Lake Ontario.’

Reportedly, President Trump asked Apple directly to make the change. The U.S. Secretary of the Interior told Fox Business on Monday that Trump “reached out to Apple directly” about the renaming. “So I’m sure that we may be seeing that change coming up, coming up soon, to Lake America.”
