Apple rolls out new AppleCare+ subscription plans in Canada with subtle price increase

AppleCare+ is now available with monthly or yearly plans, but multiple years of AppleCare+ now cost a little more than before

Apple has changed how its AppleCare+ device protection works in Canada to offer more flexible plans and more ways to buy them.

First and foremost, AppleCare+ is moving from fixed-term coverage to monthly and annual subscription plans. Further, plans can now continue for as long as customers choose, giving people more flexibility around coverage.

Previously, Apple customers could pay for a set amount of AppleCare — for example, with Mac models, customers could purchase a year of AppleCare, or three years of AppleCare. But now customers can choose to pay for AppleCare on a monthly basis, or for a whole year at once.

Unfortunately, that means some AppleCare prices will be higher than before, depending on how customers choose to purchase AppleCare.

Using the Mac mini as an example, it previously cost $54.99 for a year of AppleCare+, or $149 for three years. Under the new model, it costs $5.49/mo or $54.99/year. But if you sign up for the monthly subscription and keep it for a year, you’d end up paying $65.88, or about $10 more than paying for a whole year at once. Similarly, under the new model, three years of AppleCare+ with an annual subscription would cost $164.97, nearly $15 more than the previous $149 cost for three years of AppleCare+. This change builds on another AppleCare+ price increase that happened in mid-July.

Across the board, most annual AppleCare pricing hasn’t changed. However, the loss of two- and three-year plans means keeping AppleCare+ for more than a year will cost a little more than before. And the new monthly subscription option looks like the worst for value overall.

Alongside the change to AppleCare+ subscriptions, Apple is expanding purchase options for AppleCare+. Customers will be able to buy the coverage plan directly from the Settings app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, as well as from Apple Store locations, Apple’s website, and through authorized resellers.
