It looks like the production of the foldable iPhone has hit another snag. In a post on Weibo from today, Fixed Focus Digital said that the iPhone foldable has some issues during pre-assembly, which has caused issues during production.
While some have reported that the foldable issues are hinge reliability-related, the Fixed Focus Digital post indicates that it’s surface-mount technology during pre-assembly that’s causing the problem. SMT is the modern method of making electronic circuits where the components are mounted directly onto the surface of a circuit board.
Among the SMT issues, a previous leak indicated that the device’s hinge didn’t meet Apple’s quality control standard under conditions of prolonged, high-frequency opening and closing. Apple would need to rectify this problem before releasing the iPhone Fold. And further, these reports indicated that Apple is running behind on the folding iPhone by one or two months; however, the handset is still slated for September.
According to the well-known Mark Gurman, the foldable remains on track to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, and the iPhone foldable will launch alongside or shortly after the premium iPhones.
The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner screen with a 5.5-inch cover screen, a touch ID, two rear-facing cameras and more.
