Telus reportedly texting Public Mobile customers a $40/100GB deal

Some customers also reportedly receive $29/20GB and $25/5GB offers

Some Public Mobile customers report receiving messages from Telus offering special deals if they switch, such as a $40/100GB plan.

According to several posts on Reddit, Telus has sent various offers to Public customers, including the aforementioned $40/100GB deal, as well as a $29/20GB and $25/5GB plans. Unfortunately, your mileage may vary with these offers — I have a line with Public Mobile and haven’t received any such offer, but I also likely wouldn’t take one even if it came my way.

The text is unfortunately lacking in details, noting only that the $40/100GB plan sports 5G data and that the price includes a pre-authorized bank payment discount. It’s not clear whether the plan is limited to Canada-wide calling and texting, or if it has Canada/U.S. or North American usage.

That last point may be important for many Public customers, given most of the provider’s plans include Canada/U.S./Mexico usage. For example, right now you can get a $40/70GB plan from Public. I’d personally go for that over the Telus $40/100GB plan, as I don’t use that much data and would benefit more from the U.S. usage, since I (unfortunately) frequent the States for work.

There’s also the matter of the pre-authorized payments discount — I already dislike automatic payments because I find it makes it easier for carriers to sneak price hikes by consumers, but Telus’ insistence on using pre-authorized bank payments is even worse because it dodges the protections offered by credit cards.

The other Telus offers are slightly better, but still not great. The $29/20GB is well ahead of Public’s $30/8GB plan, while the $25/5GB only gives an extra gig compared to Public’s $25/4GB plan.

Ultimately, these offers might be worthwhile, depending on your existing Public plan and your wireless needs. But for many, I suspect sticking with Public will be the better option unless people really need more data.
