Google is rolling out Gemini for TV for its streaming devices starting today, allowing almost anybody with a Google streaming device to try it out.
For starters, Google announced back in May that Gemini would come to Android Auto, TV, and XR; however, the September rollout for Gemini TV was available only to a select few Smart TV models. If you didn’t have one of those devices, you would have to wait for it to be available on more devices. Now, all you need is a TV and a Google TV Streamer with HDCP 1.3 or later.
Gemini for TV replaces the longstanding Google Assistant, which is currently being phased out of most Google devices. Gemini for TV offers the same basic voice assistant capabilities as Google Assistant, but with what The Verge describes as “a more conversational tone.”
One example is asking for movie recommendations based on your and your friend’s preferred genres, asking for help summarizing what something is for your child, or even asking who the lead actor in a show is. You can also use Gemini for TV for smart home tasks, such as setting a timer or going to a camera feed.
According to The Verge, Gemini for TVwill be rolling out over the next couple of weeks to Google TV Streamer devices, so it may not be available on every device yet. To check whether the update is available, go to Settings, find your account, then navigate to Accounts & Profiles, where you should see a button for Voice Assistant. From there, you might see an option for Gemini for TV, if available.
