The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will open in theatres on March 26, 2027.

Nintendo made the announcement in its recently launched Nintendo Today! mobile app, which provides news, calendars, event schedules and more. The release date was confirmed in a short video on the app featuring the Zelda series’ iconic Triforce and theme song.

The untitled Zelda adaptation was originally announced in November 2023, at which time Nintendo confirmed it was working with Sony Pictures to co-finance and distribute the film worldwide. Additionally, Wes Ball (the Maze Runner trilogy, Kingdom of the Planet of Apes) is attached to direct, with Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Spider-Man producer Avi Arad serving as producers. As part of that original November 2023 announcement, Miyamoto also said Nintendo is “heavily involved in the production” of the film.

But beyond that, we don’t know any plot or casting details. Given that they’re opting to go the live-action route instead of animation like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there are many questions about how they’ll bring the world of Zelda to life. It’s also unclear whether the film will be an original story with nods to various games, like the Mario movie, or be more of a direct adaptation of single Zelda games, like Ocarina of Time. Hopefully, this live-action Zelda movie ends up being at least a little better than 1993’s Super Mario Bros.

In the meantime, there are a lot of other things to look forward to from Nintendo. The company just held a Direct featuring a slew of Switch games, and on April 2, it’ll stream another Direct focused entirely on the Switch 2. The Switch 2 is rumoured to be launching in June.
